We have 2½ months to hold hearings before Labor Day. If we fail, we are doomed to have these actions repeated by future Presidents. — NEW JERSEY — CALMLY BUT IN GREAT DETAIL, REPRESENTATIVE DENNIS J. KUCINICH STOOD ALONE ON THE HOUSE FLOOR FOR ALMOST FIVE HOURS, Monday June 9th, reading on C-Span a precisely documented indictment for the impeachment of George W. Bush in 35 separate articles. Yet none of our newspapers or TV stations even acknowledged this happened with the single exception of Keith Olbermann’s Countdown on MSNBC. A House clerk read it all again into the night on C-Span with no publicity in order to allow a quiet burial into the Judiciary Committee as occurred with Kucinich’s resolution to impeach Cheney in November of 2007.

The reasons the Democrats, like Republicans, who have sworn to support and defend the Constitution, are ignoring all of the lies, crimes and brazen illegal acts committed is almost exclusively pure politics.

The media does not want to disturb its endless repetition of the election horse race through which they can claim immunity to partisanship. But burying the evils of the Bush administration from the people is not just convenience or politics. It is complicity in these crimes.

Members of the House and Senate knew or have known of the acts committed in their name: the torture, surveillance, thousands of deaths, unbridled no bid cost plus contracts, mercenaries under no legal controls. Saying there was no time three years in a row no longer cuts it as an excuse as more and more proof is revealed, in published memoirs or whistleblower accounts.

Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) said, “This is a very grave matter that cannot be and will not be swept under the rug by some kind of a legislative trap.”

Representative Robert Wexler, Florida Democrat, who publicly called for impeachment hearings this spring, immediately co-sponsored Kucinich’s resolution June 10th. Representatives Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Sam Farr (D-CA) also signed on to the resolution, and Kucinich expects more co-sponsors in the coming days and weeks. “There will be more. I'm quite confident of that, and as members start to read the document it'll keep growing,” Kucinich said. “Some bills are sent to committee to be acted upon, but in this case it’s widely assumed, based on statements by House leaders, that it’ll be sent to committee and nothing’s going to happen. I think it’s reasonable to give the committee 30 days,” he said. “There are other areas of law that I have not, in the interest of time, put in the resolution that was introduced. But they will be put in the next one if no action is taken.”

“If we wait, we’re licensing further abuses of power. There’s been broad concern that this administration could attack Iran. Why should we give them the opening to do so by failing to challenge the lies that they told that took us into war with Iraq?” he asked. “We cannot wait for after the election. We don’t know what could happen in the next six months with respect to a further erosion of our democratic process. And what the impeachment process would do would be to have a chilling effect on further abuses of the Constitution and on creating another war.”

“If they refuse to act, you know what’ll happen. The election's over and it’s like, ‘Well, let’s not go back. That was yesterday. Let’s move forward.’ That’s what’ll happen,” he predicted. “The House leadership, which is above Congressman Conyers, and even the leadership of the Democratic Party now are joining in and saying, ‘Well, we just can’t do this.’ Well, you know what? This isn’t about politics anymore. This is about whether or not there's such a thing as the rule of law, and you can’t have a political agreement to violate the law.”

“This war has been a wedge, which has driven Americans apart,” he said. As for Congress, he said that “there is no logical explanation for their position. We cannot abdicate our responsibilities. If we abdicate our responsibilities, we end up being in collusion. Why are we not acting? There’s a reason why the Congress is so low in polls and I think it’s because the American people feel we won't stand up.”

“Where’s our heart here? What is going on that we can't connect with the suffering of other people?” he asked. “We can’t say, ‘Oh, yeah, we went into a war, they didn’t tell the truth and all these people died. Sorry about that. Pass the Grey Poupon.’ We can’t do that. We cannot become so callous that we don't care that innocent people are killed. This is what’s driving me.”

“I can’t think of any more grave offense than that the people of this country, at a moment of peril in post 9/11, would be lied to in order to get their support for a war,” he said. “There’s a difference between just being wrong and lying. And there’s a pattern of lies here. How awful it would be if the Congress looks the other way and within the next few years some nation decides to prosecute a member of the Bush Administration for war crimes at a time when we clearly knew that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with hearings?”

In a bipartisan vote of 251-166, the full House of Representatives sent Dennis Kucinich's 35 Articles of Impeachment to the Judiciary Committee. That means Chairman John Conyers now has the power to decide whether to hold impeachment hearings — or not. Incredibly, 24 Republicans voted with 227 Democrats; the 166 no votes came exclusively from Republicans.

We have toll-free phone numbers posted on our site here, numbers that connect you to the Capitol switch board, where an operator will connect you with every congress member’s office. There are more toll-free numbers available at CallCongress.org. As I was doing this I realized that it is a difficult process, even for myself who is used to public speaking. I know that there are a lot of people who would be willing to make calls as well, but do not feel comfortable talking on the phone with someone they don’t know or are too tongue tied when talking about something they feel so passionately about. This can be especially true when talking to members on the other side of the aisle who will want nothing at all to do with impeachment or the proceedings on Friday. So I figured I would jot down some of the things I do before I make my calls:

1 — I write down what I want to say — This helps me to not get flustered when I make my calls and allows me to stay focused even when my blood starts to heat up. Also — try rehearsing what you want to say a few times — you may think it might make you sound stilted — but after 40 calls you will sound that way anyway. Plus it will help you smooth out words that are difficult to say (like “House Judiciary Committee” — I dare anyone to say that three times fast!)

2 — I try to remain calm and respectful — I know that I am only talking to a staffer, but they are closer to the ear of the person I want my message to get to and even if they treat me like I am an idiot (this has only happened once) I refer back to my notes and stay focused. Even if I start to get upset I still stay respectful — and on message. It’s very good to tell the office receptionist you want to leave your message with him or her, and that “I want to leave my message with the representative’s Chief of Staff” voicemail — this means you get your words to the most important person in the congress member’s office. — Click the pics to read the rest! —

Gregory Dalessio, 30, of Cherry Hill, died June 23 in Baghdad of wounds suffered in Salman Pak, Iraq. — Now the latest tragic truth begins to come out: Read New York Times — Suicide Rate for Soldiers Rose in ’07 — 30 May 2008 — by Associated Press —The 115 confirmed suicides among active-duty soldiers and National Guard and Reserve troops who had been activated amounted to a rate of 18.8 per 100,000 troops — the highest since the Army began keeping records in 1980. — WASHINGTON DC — At least 115 soldiers killed themselves in 2007, up from 102 the previous year, the Army said Thursday. Nearly one-third of them died at the battlefront, 32 in Iraq and 4 in Afghanistan. But 26 percent had never been sent to either conflict.

That’s 188 last year alone. But these numbers included only “active duty” soldiers. One age group stood out. Veterans aged 20 through 24, those who have served during the war on terror. They had the highest suicide rate among all veterans, estimated between two and four times higher than civilians the same age. The suicide rate for non-veterans is 8.3 per 100,000, while the rate for veterans was found to be between 22.9 and 31.9 per 100,000. — Veterans for Common Sense was featured on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. On November 13, Armen Keteyian, the top CBS investigative reporter, reveals an enormous epidemic of suicides among our returning Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans.
