July 2008: Do you believe President Bush’s actions justify impeachment? Yes, between the secret spying, the deceptions leading to war and more, there’s plenty to put him on trial. 715,314 responses as of 20 August 2008, and 89% — 636,629 say yes. MSNBC Poll
November 2005: If President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, should Congress hold him accountable through impeachment? 52.7% say yes of 1,200 randomly selected adults nationwide, 10/29-11/02/2005, Zogby International Polling

Scoop Independent News — 29 July 2008 — by Michael Collins [see Part 1] — Part 2 — “When our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence they were not worried about political will, how much time there was, or about any parties' political future, they were just worried they were going to be hanged by the neck. But they did what was right. Now it is your time.” — Elliott Adams, President, Veterans for Peace, testimony July 25, 2008 — WASHINGTON — THE JULY 25th HOUSE COMMITTEE ON THE JUDICIARY HEARINGS FOCUSED ON THE KUCINICH RESOLUTION CALLING FOR THE IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT BUSH. In his resolution, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) argues that Bush knew that the Iraqis had no weapons of mass destruction, yet claimed that they did in order to justify the March 2003 invasion. The “fraudulent misrepresentations,” as they're referred to in the resolution, cost lives, compromised national security, and represented a clear abuse of constitutional power. The evidence supporting these claims is highly persuasive.
For the most part, the witness statements from House members and the panel of invited witnesses contain specific justifications for impeachment. The Kucinich resolution for impeachment, H. Res 1345, offers a concentrated body of evidence substantiating the charges and demonstrates the main charge in the resolution: the president knew that he was misrepresenting the facts about Iraq at the time he was doing it.
In the resolution, Rep. Kucinich lists corrections for each of the false assertions made by the president to justify the Iraq invasion. In addition, the resolution provides excerpted evidence and sources to support each correction of the president's fabricated rationale.
The statements in single quotes in the Kucinich resolution text below are from the president's justifications for war. From the resolution:
1. Iraq was not ‘continuing to possess and develop a significant chemical and biological weapons capability.’
2. Iraq was not ‘actively seeking a nuclear weapons capability.’
3. Iraq was not ‘continuing to threaten the national security interests of the United States.’
4. Iraq did not have the ‘willingness to attack, the United States.’
5. Iraq had no connection with the attacks of 9/11 or with al-Qaida's role in 9/11.
6. Iraq possessed no weapons of mass destruction to transfer to anyone.
7. Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction and therefore had no capability of launching a surprise attack against the United States or its Armed Forces or to provide them to international terrorists who would do so.
8. There was not a real risk of an ‘extreme magnitude of harm that would result to the United States and its citizens from such an attack’ because Iraq had no capability of attacking the United States.
9. The aforementioned evidence did not 'justify the use of force by the United States to defend itself' because Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction, or have the intention or capability of using the nonexistent WMDs against the United States.
10. Since there was no threat posed by Iraq to the United States, the enactment clause of the Senate Joint Resolution 45 was predicated on misstatements to Congress. H. Res. 1345.
The facts from that time don’t come close to justifying the use of force. As demonstrated in the resolution, the president’s case for war was based on “fraudulent representations made to Congress,” the military, and the citizens of the United States. — Click the pics to read the rest! —

Bush Accused of Tyranny and Murder
[Editor’s Note: It’s really a major step forward, and thanks to the hard work of thousands of us, that this long, seven years overdue hearing finally commenced. The cynical crew at the Democratic Leadership Council believes that by “throwing this bone” to us, they can quiet the will of most all Americans that wants Bush and Cheney held to account for their proven criminal acts of treason against the United States.
Now we need to put even more pressure on the House Judiciary Committee members to demand that the hearings progress to the logical conclusion, and that is to proceed to the removal of Bush and Cheney from office now.
Call all members of the House Judiciary Committee now — the Republican members too — here are toll-free phone numbers you can use to call all congressional offices in DC via the Capitol Hill Switchboard: Toll-Free 800.828.0498 — 866.340.9281 — 866.338.1015 — 877.851.6437 and get more toll-free numbers at CallCongress.org. Don’t wait for tomorrow, call right now, this second — jam the capitol switchboard with our demand to restore justice and reclaim democracy. Impeach the Bush gang! — Contact the House Judiciary Committee! The full members’ listing is here. For tips on how to make your phone calls really count, CLICK Making the ALL-IMPORTANT Calls.
C-SPAN, MSNBC and CNN are NOT ENOUGH. We want the hearings televised on all over-the-air tv networks, same as during the Nixon impeachment hearings way back in 1973. We want all Republicans to join with the Democrats to remove Bush and Cheney before they attack Iran, and that means before our election. We want all members of congress to obey their oaths of office to preserve, protect and defend the constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic.]
Associated Press — 15 July 2008 — by Laurie Kellman — Pelosi didn’t stop Kucinich from introducing 35 articles of impeachment, spending four hours in June reading them on the House floor and demanding hearings. — WASHINGTON — REP. DENNIS KUCINICH’S SINGLE IMPEACHMENT ARTICLE WILL GET A COMMITTEE HEARING — but not on removing President Bush from office.
The House on Tuesday voted 238-180 to send his article of impeachment — for Bush’s reasoning for taking the country to war in Iraq — to the Judiciary Committee, which buried Kucinich’s previous effort.
This time, the panel will open hearings. But House Democratic leaders emphatically said the proceedings will not be about Bush's impeachment, a first step in the Constitution’s process of a removing a president from office.
Instead, the panel will conduct an election-year review — possibly televised — of anything Democrats consider to be Bush’s abuse of power. Kucinich, D-Ohio, is likely to testify. But so will several scholars and administration critics, Democrats said.
The hearing is a modest gesture by House Democratic leaders to members like Kucinich who insist that Bush’s reasons for going to war meet the standard for impeachment. Kucinich said that if his impeachment article is tabled he would just propose another one. — Click the pics to read the rest! —

Digital Journal — 20 June 2008 — by Mary Ellen Marino, Rosemary Parish, Joanne O’Neill, Cheryl Biren-Wright, Stuart Hutchison of New Jersey Impeach Groups — ImpeachThem.com — We must demand that our Congress act and that the Constitution is upheld. We have 2½ months to hold hearings before Labor Day. If we fail, we are doomed to have these actions repeated by future Presidents. — NEW JERSEY — CALMLY BUT IN GREAT DETAIL, REPRESENTATIVE DENNIS J. KUCINICH STOOD ALONE ON THE HOUSE FLOOR FOR ALMOST FIVE HOURS, Monday June 9th, reading on C-Span a precisely documented indictment for the impeachment of George W. Bush in 35 separate articles. Yet none of our newspapers or TV stations even acknowledged this happened with the single exception of Keith Olbermann’s Countdown on MSNBC. A House clerk read it all again into the night on C-Span with no publicity in order to allow a quiet burial into the Judiciary Committee as occurred with Kucinich’s resolution to impeach Cheney in November of 2007.
The reasons the Democrats, like Republicans, who have sworn to support and defend the Constitution, are ignoring all of the lies, crimes and brazen illegal acts committed is almost exclusively pure politics.
The media does not want to disturb its endless repetition of the election horse race through which they can claim immunity to partisanship. But burying the evils of the Bush administration from the people is not just convenience or politics. It is complicity in these crimes.
Members of the House and Senate knew or have known of the acts committed in their name: the torture, surveillance, thousands of deaths, unbridled no bid cost plus contracts, mercenaries under no legal controls. Saying there was no time three years in a row no longer cuts it as an excuse as more and more proof is revealed, in published memoirs or whistleblower accounts.
Representative Robert Wexler, Florida Democrat, who publicly called for impeachment hearings this spring, immediately co-sponsored Kucinich’s resolution June 10th. Representatives Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Sam Farr (D-CA) also signed on to the resolution. More co-sponsors are expected. — Click the pics to read the rest! —

Impeach NOW
• CALL NOW New Jersey Impeach Groups — 10 June 2008 — by Keith Armonaitis — Remember you do this for something far greater than yourself — you do this because you love America and want to see it back to its former glory. — Today I printed out the [CLICK] House Judiciary Committee Members — so I could begin my calling campaign. We have toll-free phone numbers posted on our site here, numbers that connect you to the Capitol switch board, where an operator will connect you with every congress member’s office. There are more toll-free numbers available at CallCongress.org. You can call all House Judiciary Committee member offices, CLICK HERE — This site includes an instruction video. As I was doing this I realized that it is a difficult process, even for myself who is used to public speaking. I know that there are a lot of people who would be willing to make calls as well, but do not feel comfortable talking on the phone with someone they don’t know or are too tongue tied when talking about something they feel so passionately about. This can be especially true when talking to members on the other side of the aisle who will want nothing at all to do with impeachment. Here are some of the things I do before I make my calls:
REMEMBER THE MAIN REASONS FOR YOUR CALL
— When the capitol switchboard operator puts you through to the congress member’s office and the receptionist answers, you explain that you want to leave messages for the Chief of Staff and the Legislative Director for the representative. Ask their names and email addresses (the form is joan.smith@mail.house.gov) and ask if they’re available to talk to you. 99% of the time they won’t be. That’s okay; ask to be put through to the staff person’s voice mail, and you can leave your message, your name, address and email address. It never hurts to say “I would appreciate receiving an acknowledgment from you about my concerns.”
1 — I write down what I want to say — This helps me to not get flustered when I make my calls and allows me to stay focused even when my blood starts to heat up. Also — try rehearsing what you want to say a few times — you may think it might make you sound stilted — but after 40 calls you will sound that way anyway. Plus it will help you smooth out words that are difficult to say (like “House Judiciary Committee” — I dare anyone to say that three times fast!)
2 — I try to remain calm and respectful — I know that I am only talking to a staffer, but they are closer to the ear of the person I want my message to get to and even if they treat me like I am an idiot (this has only happened once) I refer back to my notes and stay focused. Even if I start to get upset I still stay respectful — and on message. It’s very good to tell the office receptionist you want to leave your message with him or her, and that “I want to leave my message with the representative’s Chief of Staff” voicemail — this means you get your words to the most important person in the congress member’s office. — Click the pics to read the rest! —

Bush Lies, Thousands Die: On March 19th, 2003, BUSH INVADED IRAQ. As of 19 August 2008, according to the reliable Iraq Coalition Casualties web site: 4,146 U.S. military people DEAD, includes 73 from New Jersey with 448 casualties — We mourn the death of Lance Cpl. Jeffery S. Stevenson, 20, of Newton, N.J., killed July 13th in Al Anbar province, Iraq. See Highest troop levels EVER. And let's face it. With 160,000 U.S. military troops plus an additional 180,000 private troops in Iraq from Blackwater and other corporations, the real death toll of Americans is many more than reported. Private corporations don't have to report the deaths of their employees.

DNC ‘08 • Ain’t My Party & I’ll Stay Home If I Want To

Long shadow• • • Buys PoliticiansL.A. Weekly — 21 August 2008 — by Marc Cooper — This week, Barack Obama’s campaign crossed the record-smashing threshold of garnering donations from more than 2 million individuals. If each of those donors had been asked for a mere three additional bucks to fund the convention, the Democrats could have astounded us all by banning its corporate underwriting. But that would have meant the Dems would be accountable to a mass of small donors and not to a few dozen special interests. And that would hardly be the Democratic Party we know. — I HAVE A PLATINUM AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD, BUT I DON’T HAVE A DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION PREMIER PACKAGE. SO I DON’T THINK I’ll be going to the DNC’s big bash in Denver next week.
The former costs me $300 a year and is well worth it. The latter, which is being furiously peddled among corporate big dogs, points up everything that’s rotten about the American political system. And that includes the Democratic Party.
Premier Package donors get a room at a Denver hotel, two credentials for the convention hall, two tickets to a party honoring the House Democratic leadership, two tickets to a VIP presidential election briefing, two tickets to a congressional “late-night” event — but only one ticket to a private party honoring that nice lady who fights for us regular folks 24/7, Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Speaker of the House. Premier Package cost: a mere $155,000.
Sure, even without a Premier membership, I could easily get to Denver on my own nickel or on that of various news organizations. But for the first time in more than two decades, I’ve opted to watch a major-party convention on TV. Here are my top three reasons for boycotting:
With 20 gazillion reporters and bloggers already enlisted, I don’t think I’d have much to add.
Second, whatever news will come out of this stage-managed affair will be focused on the Great National Baby Boomer Pseudofeminist Crybaby Me First Even Though I Lost Catharsis to be staged by Hillary Clinton and her supporters. No thanks.
But mostly, I’m staying away precisely because this year’s Democratic nominee is by far the most attractive since I started convention-going in the Reagan-Mondale era and, frankly, I don’t want to be reminded of what kind of fellow-Democrat company he keeps. Obama might be my candidate, but the Democrats are certainly not my party. — Click the pic to read the rest! —

• FOR PEACE
OpEd News — 25 August 2008 — by Rob Kall — “How many hotel rooms have I been in the past four years? It was so obvious.” — DENVER — CINDY SHEEHAN RETURNED TO HER DENVER HOTEL ROOM TODAY TO FIND THE DOOR UNLOCKED AND AJAR. SHE WALKED IN TO DISCOVER A MAN working on her phone, screw driver in hand.
Sheehan reported, in an email, “As I walked toward my room, I noticed that the door was opened with the security bolt blocking the complete closing of the door. I knew immediately that I had not left the door open, and I double checked to make sure it was the right room because, as a frequent traveler, I have been known to forget my room number, but it was the right room.
I was upset at first thinking that housekeeping had made a mistake and left my room open and I was worried that something might be missing. So I walked into my room and bigger than life, there was a man standing by my desk holding the room phone with a screwdriver in his hand!
I immediately said, “What the hell are you doing? Are you putting a bug on my phone?” He looked like he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and stammered out: “N--no, we are having problems with the phone.” I told him to get out of my room because my phone was fine and I called the front desk and the person at the front desk stammered something out about ‘problems’ with some of the phones. — Click the pics to read the rest! —
Reboot Obama: Last Call for Change We Can Believe In

Barack Obama
HOPE AND IMPEACHMENTNew York Times — 24 August 2008 — by Frank Rich — Is a man who is just discovering the Internet qualified to lead a restoration of America’s economic and educational infrastructures? Is the leader of a virtually all-white political party America’s best salesman and moral avatar in the age of globalization? Does a bellicose Vietnam veteran have the judgment to keep America safe? — AS THE REAL CAMPAIGN AT LAST BEGINS IN DENVER THIS WEEK, THIS MUCH IS CERTAIN: IT’S TIME FOR BARACK OBAMA TO DISPATCH “Change We Can Believe In” to a dignified death.
This isn’t because — OMG! — Obama’s narrow three- to four-percentage-point lead of recent weeks dropped to a statistically indistinguishable one- to three-point margin during his week of vacation. It’s because zero hour is here. As the presidential race finally gains the country’s full attention, the strategy that vanquished Hillary Clinton must be rebooted to take out John McCain.
“Change We Can Believe In” was brilliantly calculated for a Democratic familial brawl where every candidate was promising nearly identical change from George Bush. It branded Obama as the sole contender with the un-Beltway biography, credibility and political talent to link the promise of change to the nation’s onrushing generational turnover in all its cultural (and, yes, racial) manifestations. McCain should be a far easier mark than Clinton if Obama retools his act.
What we have learned this summer is this: McCain’s trigger-happy temperament and reactionary policies offer worse than no change. He is an unstable bridge back not just to Bush policies but to an increasingly distant 20th-century America that is still fighting Red China in Vietnam and the Soviet Union in the cold war. As the country tries to navigate the fast-moving changes of the 21st century, McCain would put America on hold.
What Obama also should have learned by now is that the press is not his friend. Of course, he gets more ink and airtime than McCain; he’s sexier news. But as George Mason University’s Center for Media and Public Affairs documented in its study of six weeks of TV news reports this summer, Obama’s coverage was 28 percent positive, 72 percent negative. (For McCain, the split was 43/57.) Even McCain’s most blatant confusions, memory lapses and outright lies still barely cause a ripple, whether he’s railing against a piece of pork he in fact voted for, as he did at the Saddleback Church pseudodebate last weekend, or falsifying crucial details of his marital history in his memoirs, as The Los Angeles Times uncovered in court records last month.
What should Obama do now? As premature panic floods through certain liberal precincts, there’s no shortage of advice: more meat to his economic plan, more passion in his stump delivery, less defensiveness in response to attacks and, as is now happening, sharper darts at a McCain lifestyle so extravagant that we are only beginning to learn where all the beer bullion is buried.
But Obama is never going to be a John Edwards-style populist barnburner. (Edwards wasn’t persuasive either, by the way.) Nor will wonkish laundry lists of policy details work any better for him than they did for Al Gore or Hillary Clinton. Obama has those details to spare, in any case, while McCain, who didn’t even include an education policy on his Web site during primary season, is still winging it. As David Leonhardt observes in his New York Times Magazine cover article on “Obamanomics” today, Obama’s real problem is not a lack of detail but his inability to sell policy with “an effective story.”
That story is there to be told, but it has to be a story that is more about America and the future and less about Obama and his past. After all these months, most Americans, for better or worse, know who Obama is. So much so that he seems to have fought off the relentless right-wing onslaught to demonize him as an elitist alien. Asked in last week’s New York Times/CBS News poll if each candidate shares their values, registered voters gave Obama and McCain an identical 63 percent. Asked if each candidate “cares about the needs and problems of people like yourself,” Obama beat McCain by 37 to 23 percent. Is the candidate “someone you can relate to”? Obama: 55 percent, McCain: 41. Even before McCain told Politico that he relies on the help to count up the houses he owns, he was the candidate seen as the out-of-step elitist. — Click the pic to read the rest! —
