Politico.com — 10 July 2008 — by John Bresnahan — Pelosi says House Judiciary may hold hearings on Kucinich impeachment resolution — SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI (D-CA) SAID THIS MORNING THAT THE HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE MAY HOLD HEARINGS ON AN IMPEACHMENT RESOLUTION OFFERED BY REP. DENNIS KUCINICH (D-OH).
Kucinich is expected to offer a “privileged resolution” this afternoon calling on the House to look at whether President Bush should be removed from office for lying to Congress and the American public when he sought congressional approval back in 2002 for taking military action to invade Iraq and overthrow Saddam Hussein.
Pelosi has said previously that impeachment “was off the table,” so her comments this morning were surprising, and clearly signaled a new willingness to entertain the idea of ousting Bush, although no one in the Democratic leadership believes that is likely since the president has only six months left in this term.
“This is a Judiciary Committee matter, and I believe we will see some attention being paid to it by the Judiciary Committee,” Pelosi told reporters. “Not necessarily taking up the articles of impeachment because that would have to be approved on the floor, but to have some hearings on the subject.”
Pelosi added: “My expectation is that there will be some review of that in the committee.”
The House Judiciary Committee chairman, Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), said he had just gotten Kucinich’s new impeachment resolution, and he was not sure of when hearings would occur, or what kind of hearings be held. Democratic aides said they would examine “abuses of power” by the Bush administration, although it is unclear why or how that is different from what has taken place already throughout the 110th Congress.

The Raw Story — 8 July 2008 — by Nick Juliano — Are we at least willing to defend the Constitution from the comfort and security of our Washington, DC offices? — REP. DENNIS KUCINICH (D-OH) IS STICKING TO HIS DRIVE TO IMPEACH BUSH. Few in the House of Representatives have any intention of doing anything with the last 35 articles of impeachment Kucinich set before them last month, so the former presidential candidate appears to be lightening the load. Kucinich sent a letter to colleagues Tuesday asking them to support a single article of impeachment, to be introduced Thursday, which accuses President Bush of leading the country to war based on lies.
“There can be no greater offense of a Commander in Chief than to misrepresent a cause of war and to send our brave men and women into harm’s way based on those misrepresentations,” Kucinich wrote in the “Dear Colleague” letter.
“There has been a breach of faith between the Commander in Chief and the troops. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 or with Al Qaeda’s role in 9/11. Iraq had neither the intention nor the capability of attacking the United States,” he continued. “Iraq did not have weapons of Mass of Destruction. Yet George W. Bush took our troops to war under all of these false assumptions. Given the profound and irreversible consequences to our troops, if his decision was the result of a mistake, he must be impeached. Since his decision was based on lies, impeachment as a remedy falls short, but represents at least some effort on our part to demonstrate our concern about the sacrifices our troops have made.”
Last month, Kucinich presented 35 articles of impeachment. Those have since been referred to the Judiciary Committee, where they are expected to die. Kucinich threatened to double the number of impeachment articles if the Judiciary Committee did not act.
In a video message, Kucinich thanked supporters for responding to his Independence Day call for Bush's impeachment. In the video, Kucinich said his threat for more articles was still operative and promised an update later this week.
Kucinich's full letter to members of congress is reprinted here:
Dear Colleague,
During the Fourth of July holiday a WWII veteran stood ram-rod straight in his crisp dress uniform and saluted our flag as it passed in a parade. His silent reverential stance was a powerful reminder of the love of country that is reflected in our veterans of all generations and all services.
It is also a powerful reminder of the responsibilities of the President of the Untied States in his capacity as Commander in Chief.
It is worse than heartbreaking that George W. Bush, as Commander in Chief, caused this country to go to war based on information which was false, and which he knew to be false. The consequences for our troops have been devastating. We have lost 4,116 of our beloved servicemen and women since the war began, with over 30,000 physically wounded and countless others emotionally wounded. The toll on the service persons and their families will be felt throughout their lives.
There can be no greater responsibility of a Commander in Chief than to command based on facts on the ground, and to command in fact and in truth. There can be no greater offense of a Commander in Chief than to misrepresent a cause of war and to send our brave men and women into harm's way based on those misrepresentations.
There has been a breach of faith between the Commander in Chief and the troops. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 or with Al Qaeda's role in 9/11. Iraq had neither the intention nor the capability of attacking the United States. Iraq did not have weapons of Mass of Destruction. Yet George W. Bush took our troops to war under all of these false assumptions. Given the profound and irreversible consequences to our troops, if his decision was the result of a mistake, he must be impeached. Since his decision was based on lies, impeachment as a remedy falls short, but represents at least some effort on our part to demonstrate our concern about the sacrifices our troops have made.
This Thursday evening I will bring a privileged resolution to the House with a single Article of Impeachment of President Bush for taking our nation and our troops to war based on lies. We owe it to our troops who even at this hour stand as sentinels of America because they love this country and will give their lives for it. What are we willing to do to match their valor and the valor of their successors? Are we at least willing to defend the Constitution from the comfort and security of our Washington, DC offices?
Sincerely,
Dennis J. Kucinich
Member of Congress

Updated June 30th — BuzzFlash News Alert — 13 June 2008 — by Meg White —“This isn’t just about impeachment. It’s about reorienting our politics to a position which respects morality. Our moral compass needs to be reset here.” — Rep. Dennis Kucinich — WASHINGTON DC — IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH BuzzFlash Friday, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) said, “This is a very grave matter that cannot be and will not be swept under the rug by some kind of a legislative trap.”
Representative Robert Wexler, Florida Democrat, who publicly called for impeachment hearings this spring, immediately co-sponsored Kucinich’s resolution June 10th. Representatives Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Sam Farr (D-CA) also signed on to the resolution, and Kucinich expects more co-sponsors in the coming days and weeks. “There will be more. I'm quite confident of that, and as members start to read the document it'll keep growing,” Kucinich said. “Some bills are sent to committee to be acted upon, but in this case it’s widely assumed, based on statements by House leaders, that it’ll be sent to committee and nothing’s going to happen. I think it’s reasonable to give the committee 30 days,” he said. “There are other areas of law that I have not, in the interest of time, put in the resolution that was introduced. But they will be put in the next one if no action is taken.”
“If we wait, we’re licensing further abuses of power. There’s been broad concern that this administration could attack Iran. Why should we give them the opening to do so by failing to challenge the lies that they told that took us into war with Iraq?” he asked. “We cannot wait for after the election. We don’t know what could happen in the next six months with respect to a further erosion of our democratic process. And what the impeachment process would do would be to have a chilling effect on further abuses of the Constitution and on creating another war.”
“If they refuse to act, you know what’ll happen. The election's over and it’s like, ‘Well, let’s not go back. That was yesterday. Let’s move forward.’ That’s what’ll happen,” he predicted. “The House leadership, which is above Congressman Conyers, and even the leadership of the Democratic Party now are joining in and saying, ‘Well, we just can’t do this.’ Well, you know what? This isn’t about politics anymore. This is about whether or not there's such a thing as the rule of law, and you can’t have a political agreement to violate the law.”
“This war has been a wedge, which has driven Americans apart,” he said. As for Congress, he said that “there is no logical explanation for their position. We cannot abdicate our responsibilities. If we abdicate our responsibilities, we end up being in collusion. Why are we not acting? There’s a reason why the Congress is so low in polls and I think it’s because the American people feel we won't stand up.”
“Where’s our heart here? What is going on that we can't connect with the suffering of other people?” he asked. “We can’t say, ‘Oh, yeah, we went into a war, they didn’t tell the truth and all these people died. Sorry about that. Pass the Grey Poupon.’ We can’t do that. We cannot become so callous that we don't care that innocent people are killed. This is what’s driving me.”
“I can’t think of any more grave offense than that the people of this country, at a moment of peril in post 9/11, would be lied to in order to get their support for a war,” he said. “There’s a difference between just being wrong and lying. And there’s a pattern of lies here. How awful it would be if the Congress looks the other way and within the next few years some nation decides to prosecute a member of the Bush Administration for war crimes at a time when we clearly knew that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with hearings?”

In a bipartisan vote of 251-166, the full House of Representatives sent Dennis Kucinich's 35 Articles of Impeachment to the Judiciary Committee. That means Chairman John Conyers now has the power to decide whether to hold impeachment hearings — or not. Incredibly, 24 Republicans voted with 227 Democrats; the 166 no votes came exclusively from Republicans.

New York Times — 11 June 2008 — by Associated Press — • Kucinich Seeks to Impeach Bush • — WASHINGTON DC — Representative Dennis J. Kucinich, Democrat of Ohio, defied his party leadership on Monday by calling for the impeachment of President Bush for starting the war in Iraq — but his move was not expected to go anywhere. Mr. Kucinich, a former presidential candidate, outlined his intention to propose more than two dozen charges against Mr. Bush on the floor of the House. He accused Mr. Bush of executing a “calculated and wide-ranging strategy” to deceive citizens and Congress into believing that Iraq posed an imminent threat to the United States. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has repeatedly said she opposes trying to remove Mr. Bush, calling such an effort divisive and most likely unsuccessful.

[Editor’s Note: Yup, that’s right, this is the “newspaper of record’s” entire coverage of Articles of Impeachment against the President of the United States. Well gollywhizzer, why should the Times offer an expensive extensive report of the Kucinich-Wexler resolution? Why on earth should the Times print the entire 65-page text of the bill? After all, this action concerns only the destruction of our constitution, an illegal war that’s slaughtered millions, torture, unwarranted spying, an economic crash with a national debt at $9-trillion, massive fraud by private companies and mercenary armies run by Bush-Cheney’s thug pals, and oh yeah, the theft of democracy with stolen elections, and the specter of a new war against Iran and a police-state dictatorship in the USA. Hell, why would any responsible newspaper want to devote space to this? Oh well. Here’s some short coverage from C-SPAN:]

19th Congressional District of Florida — 10 June 2008 — by Staff of Rep. Robert Wexler— Congressman Wexler Co-Sponsors Bush Impeachment. — WASHINGTON DC — TODAY, CONGRESSMAN ROBERT WEXLER (D-FL), A SENIOR MEMBER OF THE HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE, SIGNED ONTO CONGRESSMAN DENNIS KUCINICH’S (D-OH) ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT AGAINST PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH. The Articles outline numerous allegations against President Bush, including his creation of a massive propaganda campaign to mislead the nation into war with Iraq, the illegal use of torture during interrogation, the authorization of a warrantless wiretapping program on American citizens, and the repetitive use of signing statements to negate legislation passed by Congress.
“President Bush deliberately created a massive propaganda campaign to sell the war in Iraq to the American people and the charges detailed in this impeachment resolution indicate an unprecedented abuse of executive power,” said Congressman Wexler. “A decision by Congress to pursue impeachment is not an option, it is a sworn duty. It is time for Congress to stand up and defend the Constitution against the blatant violations and illegalities of this Administration. Our Founding Fathers bestowed upon Congress the power of impeachment, and it is now time that we use it to defend the rule of law from this corrupt Administration.”
This year Congressman Wexler launched a nationwide campaign to hold impeachment hearings for Vice President Dick Cheney and he has also called for inherent contempt for Karl Rove for ignoring subpoenas to testify. Congressman Wexler also led an effort to bring Scott McClellan before the House of Representatives to testify about the devastating revelations made in his recently released book.
